Throughout my investigation, I was guided by questions about how transparency and varying depths can work to build atmospheres. I started by constructing a sculptural pool for photography. While taking photos in this pool, I played with different lighting techniques like color gels and took photos at different depths of the water—some revealing reflections at shallower angles and other images giving a murky glimpse into the worlds below. As my investigation progressed, I became fascinated by how ideas like light, scale, and subtle color changes can create atmospheres. This process surfaced new questions, and prompted me to see the different ways I could create 3D worlds that could be captured with photography. I also wanted to play more with the extremes of scale, and began constructing rooms for a paper city which averaged around an inch in diameter. I kept the color scheme for these paper structures monochromatic, and used different textures like weaving to add detail. I also experimented with composition and layering to create depth and cut windows/shapes to control how light would interact with the miniature rooms.
